Analytical Responce - Okonkwo

How does Okonkwo develop themes in the text as a tragic hero?
Fate vs Free will

Starting at the very beginning of the story in the infamous novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is described as one of the most powerful and well respected men in the village,  he advances from the son of a failure, to a highly influential clan leader, and is portrayed as one of the best wrestlers and fighters and is highly respected. He associates this with his own freewill and hard work, but as soon as his luck runs out he begins to blame his fate, started with the unfortunate death of Ikemefuma, in which he blames the oracle, and the rest of his life is a downward spiral for Okonkwo filled with misfortune and tragedy.

Why does Achebe choose a tragic hero as his protagonist in his colonial counter narrative?

Achebe crated his protagonist to be a tragic hero with the purpose of creating a victim within the main character as a way to portray the oppression and sadness being colonized brings towards the people. he aims to reveal to the readers how quickly the state of a persons life could be altered due to being oppressed.

What is the person of function of Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart?

Achebe uses Okonkwo's main character as a guide for the readers to lead them through the journey of colonization, he does this so that we get an insight to the life of a person within that time thats being oppressed as a culture, Okonkwo's thoughts and actions represent the general thought process and reaction to the colonial oppression that occurred in Umuofia.
